What is a blood moon?

  • A Blood Moon happens during a total lunar eclipse when the Earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon → looks dark red or coppery.
  • It looks red due to Rayleigh scattering. Earth’s atmosphere acts like a filter. Blue light (short wavelength) gets scattered away or absorbed. Red light (long wavelength) bends around Earth and reaches the Moon, which makes the Moon glow reddish-orange.
  • A Blood Moon is safe to watch with the naked eye.
  • A blood moon event can be observed in many parts of the world on 7/8 September 2025.
