Justice Surya Kant to become 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI)
- Current CJI, B.R. Gavai, has recommended Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as the next CJI.
- Memorandum of Procedure for appointment of CJI and Supreme Court Judges: Union Law Ministry seeks the recommendation of the outgoing CJI for the next appointment, following which the latter replies to the government.
Election Commission announces 2nd phase (2025) of Special Intensive Revision
- 2nd phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls will be conducted in 12 States/UTs: A & N Islands, Lakshadweep, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, MP, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP, and West Bengal.
- Special Intensive Revision (SIR):- An exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to update the electoral rolls for ensuring accurate and error-free voter lists.
- Section 21(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, allows ECI to conduct a special revision of electoral rolls in a manner it thinks fit.
- Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, also authorise summary and intensive revisions of the rolls.
- Article 324: tasks the ECI for the preparation of electoral rolls, among other things.
- Article 326: guarantees the right of all Indian citizens aged 18 and above to be registered as voters.
 
- Recently, ECI started accepting Aadhaar as the 12th valid document for identity verification in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls after the Supreme Court’s direction → But it has been clarified that Aadhaar is NOT evidence of Indian citizenship.
What is Project Bromo?
- Code-name for a proposed merger of three major European companies — Airbus, Thales and Leonardo.
- Recently, the three companies agreed in principle to merge their satellite manufacturing & services businesses.
