Centre defines deep tech start-up
According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), a deep tech start-up is a company that:
- is primarily concerned with producing a solution based on new knowledge/advancements in a scientific or engineering discipline.
- spends most of its money on R&D activities.
- owns or is in the process of creating significant novel intellectual property (IP) and taking steps to commercialise the same.
- faces extended development timelines, long gestation periods, high capital and infrastructure requirements, and carries large technical or scientific uncertainty.
- is up to 20 years old and has a turnover of up to ₹300 crore.
Notably:
- DPIIT is the final authority to determine whether a company qualifies as a startup or a deep tech startup.
- A normal startup is a company that is less than 10 years old or has a turnover of less than ₹200 crore.
India successfully test-fires Agni-3
Agni-3 is:
- Developed by DRDO’s Advanced Systems Laboratory.
- A two-stage, solid-fuelled ballistic missile with a strike range exceeding 3,000 kilometres.
- Capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, with a payload capacity of 1,500 to 2,500 kg.
Sahyog portal
- A centralised online platform launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2024.
- Operated by MHA’s Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
- Streamlines takedown notices to social media intermediaries (e.g., Meta, X) under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act, 2000.
- Enables swift removal of unlawful online content.
- Ensures intermediaries retain “safe harbour” if they act promptly, or lose it on non-compliance.
