The Government of India Act, 1935 & Elections

Elections for the provincial legislatures under the Government of India Act, 1935 were held in February, 1937.

The congress secured absolute majority in 5 provinces out of 11 provinces. These 5 provinces are – Madras, United provinces, Bihar, Central provinces and Orissa.

The congress won about half of total seats in Bombay province.

In Assam and North-West frontier Province, Congress emerged as the largest party.

In Punjab province the Unionist Party obtained clear majority.

Several minor groups emerged in Bengal and Sind Provinces.
