| The Government of India Act, 1935 & Elections
Elections for the provincial legislatures under the Government of India Act, 1935 were held in February, 1937. The congress secured absolute majority in 5 provinces out of 11 provinces. These 5 provinces are – Madras, United provinces, Bihar, Central provinces and Orissa. The congress won about half of total seats in Bombay province. In Assam and North-West frontier Province, Congress emerged as the largest party. In Punjab province the Unionist Party obtained clear majority. Several minor groups emerged in Bengal and Sind Provinces. During July, Congress formed Ministries in six provinces : Madras, United provinces, Bihar, Central provinces, Orissa and Bombay. Later Congress Ministries were also formed in the North-West Frontier Province and Assam. Thus the Congress Ministries were formed in eight provinces out of the 11 British provinces.
