India Ranks 5th in Global Aviation Market with 211 Million Flyers in 2024: IATA Report

India has emerged as the fifth-largest aviation market in the world, handling 211 million passengers in 2024, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in its latest World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) 2024 report.

The 211 million figure marks an 11.1% increase over 2023, pushing India ahead of Japan, which managed 205 million passengers (an 18.6% annual growth). India’s growth cements its position as a rapidly expanding player in the global aviation sector.

  1. United States – 876 million
  2. China – 741 million
  3. United Kingdom – 261 million
  4. Spain – 241 million

These statistics include both domestic and international passengers, arriving and departing.

Mumbai–Delhi Route Among World’s Busiest Airport Pairs

In the list of the world’s top 10 busiest air routes, the Mumbai–Delhi route ranked 7th, with 5.9 million passengers traveling between the two metros in 2024. The Asia-Pacific region dominated the rankings.

The Jeju–Seoul route in South Korea retained the top position globally, carrying 13.2 million passengers in 2024.
