Census 2027 will keep the same urban area definition as Census 2011

✅ To ensure uniformity while comparing the urbanization trends in the country.

💡 The definition of an urban unit under Census 2011 was as follows:

  • Statutory Town: All administrative units that have been defined by statute as urban, like Municipal Corporation, Municipality, cantonment Board, Notified Town Area Committee, Town Panchayat, Nagar Palika, etc.
  • City: Statutory Towns with a population of 1,00,000 and above.
  • Census Town: All other places that satisfied the following criteria:
    (i) A minimum population of 5,000 persons
    (ii) At least 75% of the male main working population being engaged in non-agricultural pursuits
    iii) A density of population of at least 400 persons per sq. km

💡 Census 2011: urbanization was 31.2%; Census 1951: urbanization was 17.3%.
