India’s space sector

  • Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established in 1962 → transformed into the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1969.
  • NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) was created in 2019 under the Companies Act, 2013, to handle the commercial operations of ISRO.
  • In 2020, India allowed the private sector to participate in space activities and created the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) to facilitate it.
  • Indian Space Policy 2023 has been launched as a comprehensive framework to boost private involvement, commercialisation, and R&D.
  • 100% FDI in the space sector was allowed in 2024.
  • India’s space sector market was valued at nearly $8 billion in 2022 and estimated to reach $44 billion by 2033.
  • States like Telangana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have launched their own Space policy.

ICC sentences Janjaweed leader Abd‑Al‑Rahman for Darfur atrocities

  • Sudanese Janjaweed leader Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the International Criminal Court (The Hague, Netherlands) for war crimes and crimes against humanity (2003-04 Darfur conflict).
    • Janjaweed: Sudanese Arab nomad militia group operating in the Sahel region.
    • Sahel region: stretches across Africa south of the Sahara Desert → forms the transition zone between the Sahara Desert (north) and the savanna region (south).
