Centre approves ₹11,718 crore for Census 2027
- No separate budgetary allocation for updating the National Population Register (NPR), which is the first step for the creation of a countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC).
- NPR: created in 2010, followed by an update in 2015 → already has a database of 119 crore residents → Govt informed the Lok Sabha in July 2025 that no decision has been taken to update the NPR during Census 2027.
- Census 2027 will be:
- Conducted in 2 phases.
- India’s 16th census (8th since Independence).
- India’s 1st digital Census.
- 1st census to enumerate caste in independent India.
- Data will be collected in a clean, machine-readable and actionable format as part of the Census-as-a-Service (CaaS) initiative.
- Data will be collected using dedicated mobile applications.
- Census Management and Monitoring System: an online portal that is developed for monitoring the Census process in real time.
National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM)
- Introduced by the Ministry of Textiles in 2020.
- 4 components of NTTM:
- Research, innovation and development
- Market development
- Export promotion
- Education and training.
- Ending in March 2026 → likely to be extended by 2 years.
Is cancer a notifiable disease?
- Centre has not declared cancer a notifiable disease → argued that it is a non-communicable disease.
- Generally, communicable diseases are declared notifiable, but non-communicable diseases can also be declared notifiable.
- 17 States have independently made cancer notifiable.
- A notifiable disease must be reported to govt by medical practitioners and diagnostic labs upon diagnosis → enables surveillance, outbreak detection, and public health responses.
- Although public health is a State subject, Centre can also declare a disease as notifiable, e.g. Centre declared TB notifiable disease in 2012.
