  • C. P. Radhakrishnan — the ruling NDA’s nominee — got 452 first preferential votes against the joint Opposition candidate Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, who got 300 votes.
  • 15th individual to become Vice President; 17th Vice President, counting terms to date.
  • Electoral college for the election of the Vice President of India consists of:
    • Elected members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha,
    • Nominated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
  • The full electoral college for the election of Vice President comprises 788 (245 RS MPs + 543 LS MPs) electors → with six vacancies in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha, this was reduced to 781 for the election.

  • Union govt has sought a factual report from the Andaman & Nicobar administration following complaints from the Tribal Council of Little and Great Nicobar.
  • Complaint by Tribal Council:
    • Forest Rights under the Forest Rights Act (FRA) 2006 were not settled before the diversion of forest land for the Great Nicobar Island Project.
    • Administration falsely issued certification stating all FRA rights were settled.
    • Consent from the tribes was taken under pressure and later withdrawn.
  • FRA 2006: Grants community and individual rights to Scheduled Tribes and traditional forest dwellers → Consent of Gram Sabha is mandatory for diversion of forest land.
  • Administration’s stance: FRA 2006 does not apply to A&N Islands, because the rights of Nicobarese are already protected under the Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Regulation (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 1956. This regulation allows administration to divert forest land unilaterally.

Great Nicobar Island Development Project

  • ₹81,000‑crore mega-infrastructure project for the Great Nicobar Island.
  • Conceived by NITI Aayog and is being developed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIIDC).

    • Two new greenfield coastal cities

AdFalciVaxIndia’s first malaria vaccine

  • A recombinant chimeric multi-stage vaccine → uses Lactococcus lactis (genetically engineered bacterium) to produce malaria antigens.
  • Recently, Indian govt licensed the AdFalciVax technology to five Indian companies to advance clinical trials, production, and commercialization.
  • India carries 1.4% of the global malaria case burden, and accounts for 66% of cases in the Southeast Asia region → India aims to eliminate malaria by 2030.
