PM Modi to begin 4-Day official visit to Japan and China
- During his visit to Japan on 29-30 August, PM Modi will attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit with Japanese PM Shigeru Ishiba.
- India-Japan bilateral trade exceeded USD 22 billion in FY24 → India has a trade deficit with Japan.
- PM Modi will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s 25th Council of Heads of State meeting in Tianjin (China) on August 31-September 1.
Union Cabinet approves restructuring of PM SVANidhi Scheme
- The lending period has now been extended until 31 March 2030 → total outlay for the scheme is ₹7,332 crore.
- Key features of the restructured scheme:
- UPI-linked RuPay Credit Card for beneficiaries who have repaid the second loan → would provide immediate access of credit to the street vendors.
- Street vendors can avail of digital cashback incentives of up to ₹ 1,600 for retail and wholesale transactions.
- 1st tranche loan has been increased up to ₹ 15,000 from ₹ 10,000, and 2nd tranche loans up to ₹ 25,000 from ₹ 20,000 → 3rd tranche remains unchanged at ₹ 50,000.
- Scheme’s coverage is being expanded beyond statutory towns to census towns and peri-urban areas in a graded manner.
- Prime Minister Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme was launched in 2020 to support street vendors who faced unprecedented hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Tawi, Basantar, and Ujh Rivers are tributaries of the Chenab River.
- Ranjit Sagar Dam/Thein Dam: constructed on the Ravi River at the border between J&K and Punjab.
