अनुच्छेद 236. निर्वचन— इस अध्याय में,—
(क) “जिला न्यायाधीश” पद के अंतर्गत नगर सिविल न्यायालय का न्यायाधीश, अपर जिला न्यायाधीश, संयुक्त जिला न्यायाधीश, सहायक जिला न्यायाधीश, लघुवाद न्यायालय का मुख्य न्यायाधीश, मुख्य प्रेसिडेंसी मजिस्ट्रेट, अपर मुख्य प्रेसिडेंसी मजिस्ट्रेट, सेशन न्यायाधीश, अपर सेशन न्यायाधीश और सहायक सेशन न्यायाधीश हैं;
(ख) “न्यायिक सेवा” पद से ऐसी सेवा अभिप्रेत है जो अनन्यतः ऐसे व्यक्तियों से मिलकर बनी है, जिनके द्वारा जिला न्यायाधीश के पद का और जिला न्यायाधीश के पद से अवर अन्य सिविल न्यायिक पदों का भरा जाना आशयित है।

Article 236. Interpretation— In this Chapter—
(a) the expression “district judge” includes judge of a city civil court, additional district judge, joint district judge, assistant district judge, chief judge of a small cause court, chief presidency magistrate, additional chief presidency magistrate, sessions judge, additional sessions judge and assistant sessions Judge;
(b) the expression “judicial service” means a service consisting exclusively of persons intended to fill the post of district judge and other civil judicial posts inferior to the post of district judge.
